Liverpool have smashed the world record fee for a defender by completing the signing of Vigil Van Dijk from Southampton for £75million.
Van Dijk was left out of the Southampton team that lost to Spurs on Boxing Day as he was away, completing a medical after both Liverpool and Southampton agreed a fee for his transfer.
The Dutch defender will officially become a Liverpool player by January 1st when the transfer window officially opens. The £75million fee makes him the most expensive defender in the world, eclipsing the record of David Luiz, Benjamin Mendy, John Stones and Kyle Walker, who were all signed for around £50milllion.
Van Dijk has signed a 5 year contract and would earn in excess of £180,000 a week as he joins a long list of players to have moved from Southampton to Liverpool in recent years.
