Following a derby defeat that left Jose Mourinho and his men eleven points away from Manchester City in the league, their run in the League Cup came to an end yesterday after a 2 – 1 defeat to underdogs, Bristol City.
Bistol City had taken the lead in the 51st minute before Zlatan Ibrahimovic converted a free kick to bring united back on level terms. Mourinho tried to win the game by bringing on star striker Lukaku and Mkhitaryan, but it was Korey Smith who stole the show when he scored past Romero with just seconds left on the clock.
The final whistle sparked a huge pitch invasion as fans rushed to celebrate with their heroes.
In the other quarter final match, Chelsea survived a scare, when Alvaro Morata slid in Hazard’s pass into the net just 40 seconds after Chelsea had conceded an injury time equalizer. Chelsea led for majority of the match after Willian had given the host the lead in the 13th minute, Gosling equalized for Bournemouth with a curling effort in the 90th minute.
The Semi-Final draw paired Bristol City with Manchester City, while Arsenal will slug it out with London rivals, Chelsea.
